SCHMITTEN

The Schmitten in Zell am See – Austria’s most beautiful panoramic mountain in summer and winter – is one of the most traditional skiing areas in Salzburger Land. In addition to the view of more than 30 three-thousand-metre peaks, winter sports enthusiasts will find a wide range of activities on offer. Pleasure skiers appreciate the combination of many hours of sunshine and guaranteed snow.

In winter, Zell’s local mountain offers variety and fun on around 77 kilometres of slopes. With modern cable car facilities – including the Schmittenhöhebahn with its stylish gondolas by Porsche Design Studio – the winter experience starts with the first ascent. Once at the summit, it is worthwhile to linger on the terrace of the Schmitten Café, directly in the mountain station of the Schmittenhöhebahn or the newly expanded terrace of the Berghotel and let your eyes wander over the stunning panorama.

Afterwards, it’s “board until your legs burn or simply enjoy” – on the Schmitten, enthusiastic alpine fans of all levels will find their Snowdorado: 77 kilometres of piste really want to be skied. With 25 kilometres of blue slopes, 27 kilometres of red slopes and 25 kilometres of black slopes, there is something for everyone. Children can have fun in the children’s area on the Glocknerwiese or make their first experiences on skis on the magic carpet at the Areitbahn valley station. Freeskiers and boarders test their skills in the Funpark Schmitten, which is equipped with rails, fun boxes, kickers and spins. And for professionals, the legendary black trass run is ideal. If you want even more, simply let off steam on the mogul slope or in the training area. The skimovie course on the Sonnenalm is also very popular; here, film stars of tomorrow shoot their own action skimovie.

And one or the other might even discover one of the oversized wooden works of art at the edge of the slopes.
